Well-preserved fossils from this period’s Jehol group are found in the Yixian formation in northeastern China. During this period, coccolith-packed sediment formed the White Cliffs of Dover from a mineral that gives this period its name. During this period’s Maastrichtian age, the Deccan Traps erupted. This period is the “K” (-5[1])in the name of a thin band of (*) iridium-rich rock called the (-5[1])K-Pg boundary, thought to be left by an impactor at Chicxulub (“CHICK-su-loob”).
